Release of the first 3D movie

On April 10th 1953, “House of Wax” premiered nationwide: it’s the first 3D color movie produced by a major American film studio. This remake of the 1933 horror movie “Mystery of the Wax Museum” starred Vincent Price, well known for his several horror movies. He played the role of the wax museum creator, where many people disappeared.

The earliest 3D movie, “The Power of Love”, was first shown to an audience on September 27th 1922 in Los Angeles. The expensive equipments and the complicated installations prevented 3D movie projections in cinemas.

In the 1950’s, the major American film studios produced several 3D movies to fight against the growing power of television. In the 2000’s, 3D movies became more successful due to computer animation and digital projection.

This video presents a scene of the 3D movie “House of Wax” from 1953.
