Art in focus: ‘Artomatic’

The 2012 edition of Artomatic — the proudly small-D democratic art festival open to all comers — gets underway this weekend in a vacant office building in Crystal City. As always, the show, which is up through June 23, is a strange and wondrous meeting of the sublime and the ridiculous, with an inexplicable emphasis on art involving robots and baby doll heads (though, thankfully, not at the same time). Three charged in connection with robbery spree

Chap Petersen will not run for governor

Virginia state Sen.Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax) said Thursday that he has decided against running for governor or attorney general next year. In March, Petersen announced the creation of a leadership PAC and said he intended to run for statewide office. Google’s self-driving car makes D.C. Council members giddy

Marveling over what they billed as the potential future for getting around town, D.C. Council members Mary Cheh and Tommy Wells took a quick spin Thursday in Google’s new self-driving car. Cheh (D-Ward 3), chairwoman of the Committee on the Environment, Public Works and Transportation, and Wells (D-Ward 6) rode about 10 blocks in the self-driving Toyota Prius following a briefing with Google officials at the company’s Washington office on New York Avenue NW. Montgomery legislators to keep most of controversial energy tax increase

The Montgomery County Council will be keeping nearly all of a unpopular tax increase on fuel and energy use that was set to sunset this year, legislators said Wednesday. Fairfax County now has 10 companies on Fortune 500 list

In the running cross-border rivalry between Maryland and Virginia, Fortune magazine has just added another 500 points to the Old Dominion’s score. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority was spreading the word Wednesday that the county can now boast of 10 companies on the annual Fortune 500 list of the nation’s 500 biggest financial behemoths. Fairfax County wants volunteers to write more parking tickets

Revenue-hungry Fairfax County is thinking about expanding the use of volunteers to write parking tickets after a five-year decline in the number of citations issued and amount of revenue collected. The Board of Supervisors’ auditor of the board made the recommendation in a draft report that found citations had declined about 16 percent over a five-year period. Revenue fell about 5 percent despite a boost in the amount of parking fines and expanding the number of parking ordinances, the audit says. Read full article >>
